If you file an amended return (Form 1040x) and need to track the status? Below are the options for amended tax return tracking:

When tracking your amended return, you’ll need to give this information:

  • Your taxpayer identification number (for most people, this is your Social Security number)
  • Your date of birth
  • Your ZIP code

Why Is the Amended Return I’m Tracking Taking so Long?

The IRS accepts most amended returns. Since all personal amended return must be mailed, they take longer to process.  Under normal circumstances, you can expect a delay of up to four months. Even once if the IRS approves your refund, a check must be issued, which adds to the delay.  You can check the status of your amended return on the IRS website.  Not calling the IRS will not speed up the process. 

The Status Updates Will Go Through a Process (Received, Adjusted and Complete)

Received

The IRS has received your amended return. They are processing it. Keep checking on the status.

Adjusted

Sometimes, the IRS disagrees with changes to amended returns. They will indicate that they have made an adjustment to your account.  The adjustment could result in a refund (likely less than expected), balance due, or in a no tax change.   In this case, the IRS will usually send a denial letter or a more formal letter called a notice of claim disallowance. If that happens, you have two options to fix the issue be providing better support, appeal the IRS decision or take the case to court.

Denial letters or a notices of claim disallowance are usually vague.  It’s often not clear why the IRS denied the amended return. At this time, it is best to seek representation.  Why would start by getting a clear understand of why the IRS denied your claim.  Then, you’ll be able to choose the best course to take.

Complete

The IRS has completed processing your amended return. They have moved to the next step of the process.  (Issuing a check if one is due or assigning your payment to your account, if a payment was made with the amended return.  If there was a balance due, they will also calculate any penalties and
