IRS Notice CP 23- Estimated Tax Payment Discrepancy- Balance Due

IRS used Notice CP 23 to inform you that they see a difference between the amount posted to your account and the amount of Estimated Tax Payments that were claimed on your tax return. Lastly, the IRS will notify you of the balance currently due.

What Should I Do First With A CP 23 Notice?

First you will want to verify that all the estimated payment listed on the return in question are correct.  If the discrepancy listed on the CP 23 is correct you will want to pay the balance due right away. The IRS will include an envelope and a voucher with the notice, use the envelope and voucher to insure the funds are credited to proper account.

If I Don’t Agree With The IRS Regarding CP 23 What Should I Do?

You will need to prepare a response letter indicating that you dispute the notice and list the payment(s) that are missing from the account.  You will need provide a copy of the front and back of the cancelled check(s) for the payment(s) that are missing

How Long Do I Have To Respond To A CP 23 Notice?

You will have 30 days before the IRS starts send more aggressive collection notices.

What If I Don’t or Can’t Pay Federal Taxes?

If you are not able to pay the balance in full, contact the IRS at the phone number listed on the notice and set up a payment plan. Remember if you do not respond you will continue to receive progressively more aggressive notices, ultimate resulting in forced collections.
