IRS Notice CP 88- Delinquent Return Hold

IRS used Notice CP 88 to inform you that a refund from a current or prior return is being held until you file all necessary the return(s) listed on the notice.

So What Do I Do First?

You are going to want to verify and  file the missing returns listed on the notice. Those who feel that they do not need to file need to provide the IRS with an explanation. Filing Back Taxes can be a very daunting process. If you have not filed for years, you probably misplaced most of your documentation, which makes the filing of back returns very difficult.

When Should I Respond to the IRS Regarding CP 88?

As with most notice, you have 30 days to respond. If you don’t submit the missing return(s) the IRS will continue to hold your refund. If you continue to refuse to file these return the IRS will eventually file a Substitute For Return (SFR).  The IRS Substitute For Return (SFR) is a replacement return that will not be in your best interest.
