IRS Notice CP 22E- Examination Adjustment, Balance Due

IRS Sends IRS Notice CP 22E when they have made an adjustment to your return resulting in a balance of $5 or more.

What Is The First Step With A CP 22E Notice?

The notice will show the amount of the adjustment. If you agree and you pay the balance in full, there is nothing else you need to do. Make sure that you use the payment voucher and envelope enclosed with the notice. This will insure that the payment gets credited to proper account.

When Should I Reply To CP 22E IRS Notice?

Always respond to IRS notice promptly.  Each notice has a period of time before the next notice is sent by the Automated Collections Unit.  Each subsequent collections notice moves the collections process down a series with each becoming more aggressive.

What If I Am Unable or Can’t Pay Taxes Owed?

If you cannot pay the balance in full, your next step will depend on the size of the debt.  If your debt is in excess of $50,000 requesting a payment plan becomes more complicated. For most CP 22 E’s this is not the case and you can simple call the phone number located on the CP 22E notice to setup an installment agreement  or consider the other Tax Resolution options.  Remember if you do not respond you will continue to receive progressively more aggressive notices, ultimate resulting in forced collections.

What If I Am In Disagreement With the CP 22E Notice?

If you do not agree with the notice you will want to prepare a response listed the items of disagreement and provide supporting documentation to support your case.  Whether you decide to handle this on your own or seek representation will depend on the complexity of the case.
