Senior citizens are particularly susceptible to Tax-Related Identity Theft for the following reasons;

  1. Certain senior citizens tend not to be required to file a tax return; therefore, tax identity may not be detected for years.
  2. Again because many seniors are not required to file, they are not likely to check their tax account.
  3. Seniors are hesitant to report tax-related identity theft because they are concerned a relative may have something to do with it.
  4. A senior may fear that they will make their families feel they can no longer be trusted to live independently.

Senior Tax Scams tend to take one of three forms;

  1. Tax Scammers file a return using a senior's Social Security Number to obtain an undeserving refund or report income that does not belong to the senior.
  2. Tax scammers file a return and fraudulently claim the senior as a dependent,
  3. Con artists often call seniors claiming to be an IRS employee indicating the senior owes a fraudulent tax debt.  Out of fear of authorities, seniors will often pay the debt, even if they believe the may not owe.

Solutions

Stop Fraudulent Filings

Audit Alarm will notify either the senior directly or a monitor (family member responsible for the senior) of ANY filings.  Therefore, the senior receives an alert in real-time when a return has been filed on behalf of the senior or when their Social Security Number has been used on a return.  This prevents tax scams number 1 and 2.

Report Collections in Advance

Audit Alarm will notify either the senior directly or a monitor (family member responsible for the senior) of ANY potential collections issues 1-2 weeks in advance.  Therefore, the senior or the monitor would be aware of any issue months in advance.  Now when they get that scam call, they can tell them that they have a monitoring service and they would be aware of any problems if there were any.  This should help prevent tax scam number 3.
